With players quickly reaching a point where all of their experience gained goes to waste, experience from every battle, and particularly experience from missions, could use a purpose.
How about having excess experience automatically be converted to a different resource at random?
1 EXP would be equal to 1 Gold.
400 EXP would be equal to 1 food.
800 EXP would be equal to 1 Elemental Mark.
For example, if the player did a 12-hour mission that grants 2400 EXP, and uses 4 heroes, and none of those heroes needed any experience, then they would have 9,600 EXP to be converted into resources.
This EXP would randomly be converted into any of the following:
12 Elemental Marks
Alternatively, let's say the player does a 3-hour mission that grants 600 EXP to 3 heroes. This would give them a total of 1800 unused EXP, which could be turned into one of the following at random:
2 Elemental Marks
This would kick missions up a notch to help keep them useful for players in late-game. The amount of rewards from them would still be pretty small, but it would help.
